The lymphatic system is an essential part of the body's immune system and fluid balance.
It helps:
Collect excess fluid from body tissues and return it to the bloodstream, Transport lymphatic fluid through a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes, Support normal immune surveillance and function.Maintain healthy fluid balance throughout the body.
MLD may be a good option for individuals experiencing mild swelling, fluid-related puffiness, or feelings of heaviness and tightness, as well as those seeking a gentle, relaxing treatment. It may also benefit individuals recovering from surgery or managing certain lymphatic conditions when approved by their healthcare provider.
How Is MLD Different From Traditional Massage?
Traditional Massage generally focuses on muscles and soft tissues, using varying degrees of pressure to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) uses gentle, rhythmic skin-stretching techniques to encourage lymphatic fluid movement along the body's natural pathways toward appropriate lymph node regions. Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure and focuses on supporting lymphatic flow rather than relieving deep muscle tension.
MLD should not be performed when you have:
An active infection, such as cellulitis, or a fever associated with acute illness.
A suspected or untreated blood clot, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Uncontrolled or decompensated heart failure.
Sudden, unexplained swelling that has not been medically evaluated.
Any medical condition for which your healthcare provider has advised against lymphatic drainage.
Medical Clearance May Be Required
Please inform your therapist before booking if you have a history of blood clots, heart or kidney disease, cancer treatment, diagnosed lymphedema, or recent surgery. Some conditions require approval from your healthcare provider before receiving Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
At Royal Thai Massage & Spa, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is performed by licensed massage therapists with specialized training in MLD. Our treatments use gentle, rhythmic techniques based on the Dr. Vodder Method. These precise, directional movements encourage lymphatic fluid movement along the body's natural pathways toward appropriate lymph node regions.
